Why You Should Stay Organized with Your Job Applications

Previously, I spoke a bit about staying on top of mass job applications, here are 3 big tips to help you stay on top of it all!

  1. Create a file on your computer dedicated to your various resumes and cover letters. You should have a different resume and cover letter for each position you apply to. As you continue to tailor-make your resume for each position, it will become easier and easier for you to pull something together that is specific to a job. Refer to this article for more information on the why’s and how to’s.
  2. Create another file on your computer for a copy of all the job postings you’ve applied for. This way, should you get a call back for a position, you can reference what the job entails, even if it is pulled from the website that you originally applied at.
  3. Make a list on excel or word to help you track the different websites and positions for which you’ve applied. This will not only keep you organized but eventually, you will be able to see trends and statistics that will allow you to tweak things where necessary. For an example, if you started tracking your resume structures and you notice that you get more call backs with a certain resume, then tweaking all your resumes to match that style for more call backs might be necessary! It may also be a good idea to track the stages of interviews you get to as you progress through, as this may be beneficial for you to find where you need to personally develop.
  4. Bonus Tip: Remember to do something similar for all the paper applications and door to door knocking you may be doing. The last thing you want is to get a phone call from a prospective employer and go “Uhhh, I don’t know even know what this is for, can you tell me again?” Even though we all know that when you are unemployed you will apply for a bunch of jobs, but for this instance, it will reflect badly on you as it implies that you aren’t serious about that particular job/position and your chances of progressing forwards will be low.

Hopefully these tips will help you stay on top of it all during the stressful time of unemployment. As always sign off in the comments below and let us know what tips and tricks you use to help you stay organized!
