Beyonce and Tyler Mitchell is making history. The September issue of Vogue Magazine is the biggest and most influential issue of the year. As It’s the first time in the magazine’s 126-year existence that a black photographer shot the cover.
Beyonce & Opening Doors
Beyonce saw the issue as an opportunity to open doors for people who normally don’t get to be part of the cover. In her interview with Vogue Magazine, she said:
Until there is a mosaic of perspectives coming from different ethnicities behind the lens, we will continue to have a narrow approach and view of what the world actually looks like. That is why I wanted to work with this brilliant 23-year-old photographer Tyler Mitchell.
When I first started, 21 years ago, I was told that it was hard for me to get onto covers of magazines because black people did not sell. Clearly that has been proven a myth. Not only is an African American on the cover of the most important month for Vogue, this is the first ever Vogue cover shot by an African American photographer.
This proves that there is a lot of hope for the “YouTube” generation as Tyler mentioned in his interview with Vogue:
“I’m definitely a YouTube-generation kid,” says Mitchell. “I learned how to make movies and how to edit that way. I quickly formed my point of view.”
We live in a time where you can pave your own path with the help of social media. This type of influence wasn’t available before social media became mainstream.
21 years ago, the general consensus is that black people can’t “sell”. And now, 23 years old, Tyler Mitchell is the youngest photographer to shoot the cover. This is history.
