I chose this topic because a recent conversation resulted in a debate between fashion and style. More specifically, formal vs. casual. Don’t get me wrong, I prefer the suit and tie look over a pair of kicks any day, but I do believe that there is a time and place for both styles. The key is in figuring that part out. I only have one rule (for those of you who get this HIMYM reference, thank you): It is better to be overdressed than it’s converse.
So what does fashion really entail? If it can be both formal and casual, how do we know if your “OOTD” is, as my friend puts it, “Full of Chic?” Fashion tells a story about who you are to those around you. It provides something new about your identity. This is why fashion is great. You get to do you. Whether it’s formal, casual, preppy, hipster, punk, urban, or even yellow crocs, it defines who you are.
That being said, keep in mind the setting you will be in. For example, I would not wear the outfit in the photo on the left to a dinner with my colleagues. It would be more along the lines of the one on the right:
My advice to you is this: your outfit depends on who you are, and if you can rock it, give er’ 110. Because today, being genuine to yourself is very rare. I suggest starting there.
