The tale of Linh Cinder is a wonderfully re-imagined classic of The Grim Brother’s tale of Cinderella. Though there are many retelling’s of this story, Cinder has been one of the more creative iterations of this fable. Set after the 4th World War, the tale of new age Cinderella is set in the unlikely city of Beijing. When I first came upon this book, my initial reaction was to roll my eyes and think – not another one! However, all it took was one read through of the back cover and I was in! Being a Chinese-Canadian, I don’t often come across books that can relate so well to the culture and heritage that I’m familiar with; I was piqued with curiosity. This could either go very well or very poorly.
Needless to say, I was not disappointed! The story was comprised of all the components of a great tale, which easily kept me riveted throughout the whole thing. Although this is yet another young adult novel, I believe this is one that people of all ages will enjoy since it is a tale that is beloved by many.
“Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.” -Book Synopsis
